General Guidelines

This guide reflects the APA 7th edition.

The following are some very general guidelines for formatting your APA style paper. For more in-depth instructions, refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

  • For student papers, include a Title Page with the following element:  title of the paper, the author's name, and the institutional affiliation.
  • Also include an abstract between 150-250 words on it's own page.
  • A header should appear at the top of every page including the title page. The header should include a shortened title and page number.
  • The document should be formatted with one inch margins, double space text, and paragraphs indented one half inch.
  • A Reference list at the end of the paper which includes all sources used and cited in the text should be included at the end of the paper (see below for more information).

According to the APA Manual, cite any ideas, theories, and research that influenced or shaped your writing. You should only cite works that you have personally read! Use the author and date system to reference your sources in your paper. For direct quotes or to cite a specific section with a source, use the author and date plus the page number (or paragraph, section, etc.). See the examples below on different ways to accomplish your in-text citations.

  • Confusing this issue is the overlapping nature of roles in palliative care, whereby "medical needs are met by those in medical disciplines; nonmedical needs may be addressed by anyone on the team" (Csikai & Chaitin, 2006, p.112).
  • Interpreting these results, Robbins et al. (2003) suggested that the "therapists in dropout cases may have inadvertently validated parental negativity about the adolescent without adequately responding to the adolescent's needs or concerns" (p.541), contributing to an overall climate of negativity.
  • According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners.

Each in-text citation should correspond to an entry in the reference list.

  • The reference list should be on a separate page from the main text of your paper.
  • Continue using one inch margins.
  • Title the page "References". This should be centered at the top of the page in bold.
  • Text should be double spaced and the first line of each reference should be flush to the left margin. If the reference exceeds one line, indent the subsequent lines one half inch from the left margin.
  • The entries should be listed alphabetically by author (see APA Manual section 9.44 to 9.48 for more information).

Citing The Bible

It is not necessary to include the Bible in your reference list. However, you do need to indicate In-Text which verse and version you used.

The Bible enumerates these virtues: "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Cor. 13:1 New International Version).

If your professor wishes for you to cite the Bible in your reference list, treat it as a book with no author or editor identified.

Holy Bible: New International Version.(1978). American Bible Society.

Lecture, Speech, Address, or Reading

If you find the speech in a book, simply cite the book. Use the in-text citation to indicate the speaker.
